MTG Draft Tournament

by Justin 18. May 2008 02:07
Well, this has nothing to do with video games, but it does have to do with games, and it’s a game I love to play, so I suppose I’m allowed to blog about it. It is my blog after all, isn't it?

Today I got together with some friends and we had a small 8 person Magic: The Gathering tournament. We played a limited draft tournament in the newest set Shadowmoor. I drafted a decent blue/black deck that had some decent aggro, and supplemental mill (thanks to Drowner Initiate, Memory Sluice and Knacksaw Clique) We played 4 rounds of best 2 out of 3 games.

Round 1
I pretty much got my butt handed to me, the guy I was playing against managed to get some awesome combos out fairly early in both games, and was attacking for 9+ unblockable damage, I didn't stand a chance.

Round score: 0-2
Record: 0-1

Round 2
I had much better luck; I had good draws and was getting everything I needed to counter what my opponent was doing. Game one I managed to attack for the win with long assault of small creatures. Game two I managed to mill him down for the win, pulling of an awesome 12 card mill having both Drowner Initiates in play, and using their abilities in conjunction with a conspired Memory Sluice.

Round Score 2-0
Record: 1-1

Round 3
Round three started off in my favor, actually getting some good use out of my Knacksaw Clique and playing a few things out of my opponent’s library, he wasn't too happy about that. Games two and three, he paid me back and cleaned the floor with me.

Round Score: 1-2
Record: 1-2

Round 4
Round four was bad for me, I just couldn't get the mana I had, most I had in either game was 4, and I wasn't getting very good draws to go with it. Then as I got stuff out, my opponent had an answer for just about all of it. I did manage to get a 10 card mill off, but it was too little too late.

Round Score: 0-2
Record: 1-3

So I ended up with a pretty crappy record, only winning one round - but hey I had a great time, and got my single booster prize, and got some nice cards out of it - so it’s all good in the end. After the tournament we hung around and played a few other games just to extend the fun (and random nerdy internet and movie references). All in all - I had a great time, and I can't wait for the next one!
