LOTRO First Impressions

by Justin 30. May 2008 14:15

Okay, as I promised here are my first impressions of Lord of the Rings Online.

Character Creation
I thought the character creation was pretty nice, very informative on the roles of the classes as well as the information for each of the races. I really liked the videos you could watch that gave a brief summary of the class/race you were looking at. I was a little sad at the small list of classes, coming from EQ and EQ2 where there are tons of classes, the short list just seemed too short.

Controls
The controls seemed pretty normal, basic movement kind of a hybrid between WoW and EQ2. The one thing I didn't like about the combat (which may be my class choice) is that you truly just keep mashing the buttons to attack. It seemed like all I needed to do was target something and then start mashing away at my number keys. Sure it was interactive, but it was mind numbing...

Look and Feel
The game is pretty, it looks good, and feels nice, the movement of the characters feels a little wonky to me, but I may just be crazy...

Immersiveness
The game was pretty immersive, I didn't play a whole lot, but the initial story thru the tutorial was very well done, keeping you moving thru, and actually letting you talk to Elrond is always a plus.

Conclusion
Well I only had a 14 day trial, because in order for me to use the 30 day key that I won, I would have to buy the game, and from my experience in the trial, I don't think I want to spend the 20 bucks to do that just yet, I'm still enjoying EQ2 plenty enough to not want to split my time between two games, for the fear that I wouldn't play LOTRO enough to justify the purchase. So as it stands now - I'll be staying away from LOTRO, but I will be watching it, maybe an expansion will get me interested enough to take the plunge fully into Middle Earth.
