SUWT #28

Shut Up We're Talking episode #28 is out this week and here is the agenda:

Topics:
Introductions
Listener mail/What we’re playing
Vets being babies?
Screw Imbalance
Exploration and Challenge
Blog of the Week

Hosts:
Darren - Commonsensegamer.com
Karen - Journey’s with Jaye
Michael - MMOG nation
Brent - Virgin Worlds

The topics on this week's show were of good interest to me, I agree a lot with what Darren/John had to say about on the subject of "Vets being whiny". It's standard procedure in business to "lure" in new customers with all sorts of deals, leaving current customers in the corner. The benefit to current customers is not as direct and instant, so they don't realize it, IMO. When new customers come in, be it for a MMO, or a phone company or whatever, the company is going to become stronger and larger. Now that company will have the opportunities to improve itself be it providing new features, making themselves more stable or whatever. That’s a huge benefit to the veteran player, not to mention new blood in the community to add to your guild, or gank if your into pvp.

On the topic of "Screw Imbalance" I have to agree 100%. Make some classes way more powerful, just because a class is more "better" doesn't mean it’s the only class people will play, and it definitely doesn't mean it's the best class. Even in the pvp realm, I think balance is way too much of a focus. Diversity is what keeps these games fun, and that should be the focus, keep the classes interesting and your players will stay interested.

I'd like to take this moment to thank Darren, Karen and the crew of SWUT for mentioning me on the podcast as the "Blog of the week". You guys have been putting out a quality show for 28 episodes now, and I can't wait to keep seeing them come out in the future. Keep it up guys!

Take a listen to the show, and then make sure you digg it!

P.S. Hey Darren, I've completed my task, and added Brent and Michael to my blogroll.

Totally Rad Show #63

by Justin 4. June 2008 16:01

First off, I'd like to recomend this weekly podcast to anybody that is remotly interested in movies, video games, tv or comic books. They are hilarious and put together a very well done show. Ok, now on to the commentary.

This week on the show the guys covered the following things:

This week, I didn't have a whole lot of interest in the topics they were planning on covering, but I watch it none the less, because they always have a very entertaining show. The intro was quite amusing, and fit the show since they reviews AoC.

The segment they did on the Wii was hilarious, watching them all razz each other while they play the various games that come along with the Wii Fit.

They gave a pretty positive review of AoC, and Dan seemed excited about Beyond Good & Evil 2

That's about all I have to say on the episode, yet it was very entertaining.

Totally Rad Show #62

by Justin 28. May 2008 16:08

This week on the show the guys covered the following things:

Their review of Indiana Jones is about what I expected to hear from them, i've heard mixed reviews and the way they had been pumping it up for themselves, I'm not surprised to hear that they didn't like it. They do reccommend it for watching as long as you fall into the "like the Indiana Jones saga" category, those that don't care, or love it - should avoid the movie.

They trashed Haze hardcore, saying it was "every other fps shooter rolled up into one." They also report that it was quite glitchy and buggy. Almost makes me want to hear Yahtzee review it.

The Prince of Persia screen shots look cool, I loved the origional 2D game. I also enjoyed Sands of Time even though it was a bit short, After that I haven't been very interested in the PoP games, maybe this one will bring me back?

Top Gear looks quite interesting, i've watched a few pieces of the show on Youtube, I should look into it. Dollhouse looks cool, and the fact that its another Joss Whedon creation makes me even more excited.

Totally Rad Show #61

by Justin 21. May 2008 17:17

Since I watch The Totally Rad Show every week, and they do cover video games every week, i'll be reviewing my thoughts on each week's episodes of the show.

This week on the show the guys covered the following things:

Their review of Naria is about what I expected from them, very similar to their thoughts on the first Narnia movie - though they thought it was better than the first. This makes me excited, as I enjoyed the first Narnia I'm expecting to enjoy this movie even more.

City of Ember sounds cool, I myself have not taken the time to watch the trailer for it, but what they said about it, and what was shown during the show; it sounds like it has potential to be pretty cool.

Since I no longer own a Wii neither of the games they reviewed actually applied to me, but they did enjoy both of them greatly. If I still had a Wii I would definitely be picking up Boom Blox, as it looked amazingly fun, and appears to be a good party game. Lost winds however didn't appear to look to fun to me, I didn't like the idea of having to use the Wii remote to make your character do stuff.

SUWT #26

by Justin 20. May 2008 10:25

Darren from The Common Sense Gamer and Karen from Journeys with Jaye hosted another episode of Shut Up We're Talking this week, with guests John from The Ancient Gaming Noob and Scott from Pumping Irony.

Here is this week's agenda:

  • Introductions
  • Listener mail/What we're playing
  • AoC: Broken Game or Playing Beta
  • No Guild Hopping Plz
  • Free Trial MMOs
  • Blog of the Week

Topics:

  • Open Beta vs Closed
  • AoC Closed Beta Worlds
  • Guild Hopping
  • Fixing Guild Hopping
  • Fixing WoW's progression problem
  • Who Does the Epic Belong to?
  • How to get more people to buy Your MMO

It was another entertaining episode, full of all sorts of jibber jabber. One of the subjects that I really enjoyed was that on Guild Hopping. I thought some of the ideas presented to help alleviate guild hopping were good indeed. Others I didn't agree with too much. I do think game companies should implement some form of DKP (or multiples that can be chosen from) to the guild system.

Guild progression is a very important thing, That’s a big thing that helps turn a guild from a large random pickup group, to a large family of people. I've been in large guilds that have actually started meeting IRL once a year, because of the relationships that have formed over the years of building up the guilds and characters. That's exactly what guilds are all about.

You can digg the show as well to show your support!
